Oprah Car Winner Picks Up VW at Farmington Hills Dealership

John George's niece, Kelly, a Mercy High grad, nominated him for the show.

Last November, , a Farmington Hills native and graduate, who nominated her uncle John George for an appareance on The Oprah Winfrey Show's Ultimate Favorite Things program.

John founded Motor City Blight Busters 18 years ago to help restore troubled Detroit neighborhoods. Blight Busters cleans up, restores and builds housing with the help of more than 10,000 regular volunteers. Kelly nominated him because he's her personal hero.

On Thursday, John picked up a red, 2012 Volkswagen Beetle, which he and other local heroes were awarded during the show. The Detroit Free Press was there to capture the moment at in Farmington Hills. The Free Press reported that the dealership picked up the taxes and fees on the car, one of six awarded to Michigan residents – including Kelly.
