Thornton & Grooms Celebrates 75 Years

When the Farmington Hills company opened its doors, home heating and air conditioning systems were not affordable for the average homeowner.

Thornton & Grooms, a local plumbing, heating and cooling company founded in 1937, celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.

When the company opened its doors, home heating and air conditioning systems were almost nonexistent for the average homeowner. Due to their size and cost, systems were mostly restricted to large buildings such as movie theaters, department stores, and the homes of the well-to-do.

The very first “room cooler” from Frigidaire had been introduced a mere eight years earlier and the first heat pump six years earlier. Coal was still the norm for heating homes, but oil furnaces were starting to become more common. There were still homes that did not have indoor plumbing, especially in areas just a few miles outside the city.

How has the company kept up with sweeping changes? Owner, sales manager, and marketing director Dave Knight said, “Our entire team is constantly looking out for new technologies and industry trends, and we take pride in being experts in our industry. We always want to be ahead of the curve.”

Of their excellent longtime customer service record, Knight said, “We understand that satisfied customers are essential to our success. We achieve complete customer satisfaction by going above and beyond. We listen and understand what the customer wants and then deliver it flawlessly. We would not be 75 years in business if customers weren’t raving fans of our service.”
