Botsford Hospital Hematology Lab employee chosen for award

Botsford Hospital Laboratory staff selected Maureen Olszewski, MLT(ASCP), a nationally-certified medical laboratory technician, to receive the Joseph H. Langnas, D.O. Memorial Laboratory Enrichment Award. Botsford's Department of Laboratory Services hosted the award ceremony in December, which was attended by Olszewski's coworkers, the hospital's pathology staff, members of the Langnas family, and others.

Dr. Langnas' family established the award to support the attendance of a Botsford Hospital lab employee at a professional society educational meeting.

This award honors Olszewski for outstanding dedication and commitment to patient care and the support of her department for more than 25 years since the day in 1988 when she was hired by Joseph Langnas, D.O., who was Botsford Hospital's medical director of Laboratory Services and chairman of its Pathology Department. Dr. Langnas passed away in 2005.

At Botsford, Olszewski has performed countless tests on blood samples. For a quarter of a century, she has been instrumental in detecting diseases of the blood and tissues that form blood.

"Maureen ensures each patient for whom she reports results has received the best care possible from the laboratory," says Gil Herman, M.D., Ph.D., Botsford's current director of laboratory medicine and chairman of pathology. "Her quality works aids clinicians in determining the appropriate course of treatment to serve our patients."

Dr. Herman continues, "Maureen in an exemplary employee and an outstanding technician whose work ethic and dedication to quality patient care make her a role model for the entire lab. She is one of the most team-focused individuals I've encountered. Maureen is always willing to help and does so without being asked. She'll see a need and will make sure it is met to benefit our patients and our laboratory."

Olszewski credits her parents for teaching her the importance of having a good work ethic. Her patient-focused work ethic exemplifies the hospital's mission and vision to provide personalized, quality health care.
