Gilda's Club Metro Detroit honors Botsford Cancer Center with award

No one faces cancer alone. This Gilda's Club tenet is shared by the Botsford Cancer Center. These two organizations have enjoyed a strong partnership since 2009 when the cancer center opened on the campus of Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, Michigan. To honor this ongoing successful partnership, Gilda's Club Metro Detroit has conferred its Program Support Award on the Botsford Cancer Center.

Families affected by cancer access Gilda's Club programs at the Botsford Cancer Center, including the Life After Treatment support group, Yoga Workshop, and the Breast Cancer & You support group. Almost 1,000 people have attended these programs during the last two years.

"For years, the Botsford Cancer Center has recognized the importance of treating the whole patient through exemplary medical care and psychosocial support, wellness programs, and education," said Laura Varon Brown, executive director & CEO of Gilda's Club Metro Detroit. "We are honored to be on site at the Botsford Cancer Center with free weekly Gilda's Club programming, and we are privileged to celebrate them as our 2014 Program Support Award recipient. With Botsford, we experience firsthand, how together, two caring and purposeful organizations can support each other to make a difference and improve outcomes for the courageous families we serve."

The award was presented at Gilda's Big Night Out on May 15 at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit. This annual gala helps generate revenue to support Gilda's Club mission. This evening included a strolling dinner, music, an awards ceremony, and a silent auction.

"All of us at the cancer center are thrilled about receiving this award from Gilda's Club Metro Detroit," said Nicholle Mehr, director, Botsford Cancer Center. "Our excellence in medical and radiation oncology is a given, but the reassurance, courage, and support we give to our patients and their families makes all the difference to them. Cancer affects people in so many ways. It is a blessing to have Gilda's Club here to extend the support services and resources we are able to offer our patients."
