Longtime emergency technician receives Botsford Hospital’s Safety Award

Botsford Hospital has named 11-year employee Keith Ciaramitaro, EMT, as a recipient of its Safety Award. Botsford's Safety Award recognizes employees' contributions to the hospital's safety initiatives. Safety is a pillar on which Botsford has built its clinical care.

As an emergency technician, Ciaramitaro provides a specialized form of medical assistance to nurses and physicians in Botsford Hospital's Emergency & Trauma Center.

A PASSION FOR PREPAREDNESS
He also serves as the hospital's EMS liaison and emergency preparedness specialist. In this role, he works with Botsford's Emergency Preparedness Committee to help the hospital meet state and other regulatory goals, represents Botsford in meetings with county and regional emergency preparedness partners, and serves as the hospital's 24-hour contact for them. Ciaramitaro also aids disaster policy and plan development and leads the hospital's Emergency Response Team for hazardous materials incidents. He helps ensure Botsford's equipment and procedures are up to date and ready to respond to whatever emergency may arise. Ciaramitaro seeks out training opportunities in emergency response, develops educational programs for staff, and conducts routine training exercises to heighten staff preparedness.

When Ciaramitaro saw the need to expand hospital training in safety, he volunteered to develop the role of Emergency Center safety officer. In this, he rounds regularly throughout the Emergency Center to identify risks, following up with facility improvements or personnel training as needed to resolve or reduce identified risks.

Through his initiative, drive, and commitment, Ciaramitaro has improved the overall safety environment within the Emergency Center and throughout the hospital, ensuring that Botsford Hospital will be able to serve the community if and when disaster strikes.
