According to The National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) about 47 percent of metro Detroiters are reportedly functional illiterate.

“Literacy is a requisite for employment and productive participation in today’s society so illiteracy challenges must be addressed,” said Dr. Daphne Ntiri, Prof. Wayne State University & Director of the Detroit Literacy Coalition. “There continues to be a need for vital tools such as books to help adults, parents and children in Detroit when it comes to reading and writing.”

The Detroit Literacy Coalition (DLC), formerly the Detroit Area Lifelong Learning Coalition is a partnership of organization in southeast Michigan devoted to helping adults read, write and acquire the basic skills for success in today's world. The DLC believes in a fully literate society and functions to support, promote and ensure the availability and accessibility of literacy services through the collaborative efforts of its members. The DLC is a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization and one of the partners of DETROIT READS.

“This is one of the important causes that unites our staff. We feel there few gifts better than the gift of reading. Being able to read opens doors and leads to better quality of life for children and families,” said Ron Elkus, co-owner of The Shirt Box. “The problem of illiteracy is a community issue, we can work together to help solve it.”
