Two Botsford Hospital obstetrics/gynecology residents take first place at research day

Rachel Kaplan, D.O., and Melissa Kushlak, D.O., both fourth-year obstetrics/gynecology residents at Botsford Hospital, were each awarded first place for their research projects on December 19, 2013.

Dr. Kaplan's poster presentation was titled "How Accurate Are Bedside Ultrasounds in Estimated Fetal Weight?" She placed first among a field of 19 candidates representing 12 hospitals.

Dr. Kushlak's oral presentation "Will a Standardized Check-List Based Oxytocin Protocol Reduce the Rate of Failed Inductions of Labor?" took first place among a field of five candidates representing four hospitals.

The American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOOG) requires all senior-level OB/GYN residents to participate in an annual OB/GYN Educational Day through the Statewide Campus System of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. The event, the George W. Russian Resident Research Day, was held at Lansing Community College.

"I am so proud of Rachel and Melissa, my co-chief OB/GYN residents!" said Angela Fleming, D.O., Botsford Hospital's OB/GYN Residency Program Director. "This year is the first time any Botsford resident has taken first place in this competition, and we had not one but two first places. It's so exciting to have them recognized for all the hard work they put into their research projects."

A panel of three judges at the event weighed the residents' research projects against strict criteria for background, significance, methods, results, conclusions, and writing.
