The holiday weekend is upon us, with plenty of opportunities to ring in the new year with fun activities – and plenty of precipitation:
1. The weather
The National Weather Service predicts a wet weekend, starting with a 90 percent chance of rain today and a high around 43. The rain is expected to turn to snow tonight before it clears out for a partly cloudy Saturday. But snow is back in the forecast on Sunday, with a 30 percent chance we'll see the white stuff. Temps will remain in the 30s, up to 40 for New Year's Day, then will dip into the mid-20s Sunday night.
2. Government offices, library close
offices are closed today, but you can drop off your property tax payment. Both Farmington and offices will be closed on Monday for the New Year's holiday, as will the and both the and post office branches. The Farmington Community Library and will be closed Saturday and Sunday, and will reopen on Monday.
3. Old Winery Market

4. New Year celebrations:
The younger set can celebrate Midnight at 3 p.m. with open skating from 1-7 p.m. New Year's Eve. There will be a prize-filled balloon drop at 3 p.m. Party favors are included in the $7 per person ticket; skate rentals are extra. Or hang with the late night crowd for a prize-filled balloon drop at midnight. The 8 p.m. event includes skate rental (in-line skate rentals extra), pizza, pop, party favors, games and prizes. 5. New Year celebrations:
Make your reservations today for a Family New Year's Eve bowling party that starts at 11 a.m. on New Year's Eve. Tickets are $12 per person and include two hours of unlimited bowling, party favors, shoes, pizza, pop, and prizes. For the adults, a 6 p.m. event offers three games of bowling, a buffet dinner, champagne toast, party favors, mystery games and a chance to win $200.
