5 Things You Should Know This Weekend: Jan. 6-8, 2012

Farmington Hills city council will discuss goals Saturday inspired by the 2020 visioning process.

Another busy weekend is upon us, and if you're looking for opportunities to have some family fun in Farmington and Farmington Hills, be sure to check out our Weekend Planner. Here's what else you should know about the next few days:

1. The weather

While winds will kick up today as high as 26 miles per hour, the rest of the weekend should remain fairly calm. The National Weather Service predicts a high of 51 today (you read that right - 51), with daytime highs around 40 and lows in the upper 20s Saturday and Sunday. 

2. Farmington Hills council talks 2020 visioning, SMART

After hearing reports from subcommittees involved in the city's 2020 visioning process, officials will meet in the community room Saturday at 9 a.m. to talk about goals for the coming year. They'll also discuss recent issues with SMART bus service, service delivery enhancements and economic development. The meeting is open to the public.

3. workshop:

Kids ages 5-12 will learn how to build a wooden savings shed Saturday morning at the store on Northwestern in Farmington Hills. They'll take home their completed project, a workshop apron, certificate of achievement and commemorative pin. And best of all, it's free! 

4. Look ahead:

It's a new year for this talented group of quilters, after and delivery of quilts to homeless veterans. Feel free to drop in at the  at 6 p.m. Monday, no matter what your level of experience or skill. Veteran quilters Ruth Ann Carter, Susan Horner and Laura Meyer will provide advice and support.

5. Look ahead:

If you know a budding performer in grades 6-12, be sure they know about this event, held on Tuesday. The offers students with all levels of experience, from beginners to advanced, an opportunity to perform a wide variety of choral music. Appointments for auditions held between 5 and 6 p.m. can be made by calling the  at 248-473-1859; open auditions will be held between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Visitor's Center in .
