5 Things You Should Know This Weekend - Sept. 2-4, 2011

Football, ballroom dancing and more are on tap this Labor Day weekend.

We're headed into a long holiday weekend, with more than a few activities to keep your calendar full:

1. The weather

Looks like a rainy weekend, with a good chance of thunderstorms starting tonight. According to the National Weather Service, there's a 50 percent chance tonight and tomorrow, a 40 percent chance Sunday and a slight chance of showers on Monday. Temperatures over the weekend will range from a high of 92 today to 67 on Monday, with nighttime temperatures dropping from 71 tonight to 50 Monday night.

3. Ballroom dancing

On the first Friday of each month, the Senior Division at the in Farmington Hills offers ballroom dancing for adults over age 50, with a buffet dinner and music by the Mike Wolverton band. The event starts at 3 p.m.; couples and singles of all experience levels are welcome. Call 248-473-1800 for information. Cost is $9 in advance, $10 at the door.

4. Farmers Market

If you're staying in town this weekend, make a trip to the Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market at the Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Music by singer/songwriter Chris McCall, a chef's demo and more make it a full day of fun.

5. Faceoff in Farmington

The Plymouth Whalers hockey team takes on the Windsor Spitfires in the "Faceoff in Farmington" Saturday, 7 p.m., at the . The first pre-season game gives fans a chance to get in some ice time with the Whalers mascot before the game, as well as a post-game meet-and-greet with players. Tickets are $10; proceeds go to the Farmington Hills Hockey Association. Check the event listing for a link to buy tickets.
