5 Things You Should Know This Weekend—Sept. 23-25, 2011

Look for a rainy weekend, with much to do in Farmington and Farmington Hills.

While Harvest Moon activities will dominate the calendar in Farmington, there's plenty to do around the community this weekend. You may be dodging raindrops, but here's what's happening:

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts a 50 percent chance of rain Friday and 30 percent for the rest of the weekend. Expect highs in the low to mid-60s, with lows around 50 Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

2. Sports lineup

Farmington High School celebrates homecoming this weekend, with a 5:30 p.m. parade before Friday's 7 p.m. football game and a dance Saturday at 8 p.m. Here's what else is going on this weekend:

Home Opener vs. Queen City Steam out of Evendale, OH, 7:45 p.m. Friday (Game 2 at 6:45 p.m. Saturday) at the Farmington Hlils Ice Arena, . 3. Find a bargain

: Support the Class of 2012 and find great deals on children's clothing and equipment on Saturday. Early birds pay $1 from 9-10 a.m. After 10 a.m., admission is $2 to browse more than 100 tables. Strollers are welcome. The sale is open until 1 p.m.

: The in Farmington hosts this event on Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. with local crafters and vendors representing Tastefully Simple, Pampered Chef and more. Admission is free. Part of the proceeds benefit the Michigan Veterans Foundation for Homeless Veterans.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness will host its eighth annual Saturday at 10 a.m. at in Farmington Hills. The 5k walk will raise thousands of dollars for NAMI and the mental health services it provides to families across the state. The Detroit Wind Jammers, a kite-flying group, will be there, along with the , a disc jockey, dancers and karate demonstrations. It's all free, as is registration for the walk. Participants are asked to raise funds for the cause.

5. Harvest Moon

The three-day celebration continues Friday with a Taste of Farmington and dance featuring Rockestra at the , 6 p.m.-11 p.m. Saturday's Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market, open 9 a.m.-3 p.m., offers a fun-for-all-ages animal show with Farmer John, straw scrambles, a pumpkin bounce house and a toddler hay bale maze, along with live music by Bob Monteleone and Daniree. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., there'll be full pour beer and wine served in the tents south of the Pavilion. Tickets for the dance and Taste of Farmington are $8 at the door; Saturday's activities, except the beer and wine, are free.
