5 Things You Should Know This Weekend—Sept. 9-11, 2011

Along with regular activities, the weekend offers opportunities to reflect on 9/11.

We're headed into another busy weekend in Farmington and Farmington Hills, including several opportunities on Sunday to reflect on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks:

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts the rainy weather will continue through Saturday, with a 40 percent chance of showers Friday and Saturday and 60 percent Friday night. Daytime temperatures will climb into the low 70s Friday and Saturday, with partly sunny skies and 77 degrees predicted Sunday. Nighttime lows will hover around 60 degrees all weekend.

3. Give Blood

One of the ways to turn the events of 9/11 into a positive action is to give blood, and you've got two opportunities this weekend. Friday, donate at , in a drive that runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On Sunday, is sponsoring a drive from 7:45 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. For more information about blood donation, visit redcrossblood.org.

4. Family fun

Lots of activities this weekend for families:

, Saturday 9-11 a.m. The historic is raising funds to save its aging bell tower. Cost for the pancake, sausage, coffee and juice breakfast is a free-will donation.

, Saturday 10:30 a.m. Join your friends at the auditorium for pirate stories and rhymes, plus pirate crafts and activities. The program is free, and no registration is required.

, Saturday 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Clinics, fitness classes, crafts, open swimming and lots of fun activities for the whole family.

, Saturday, noon-4 p.m. Stop by , get your car washed and help out a program that serves local young people.

5. 9/11 anniversary events

On Sunday morning, starting at 8:30 a.m., the community is invited to share a time of reflection at new outdoor classroom. The focal point of this outdoor space, located behind the school, is a sculpture that incorporates a piece of the World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. At 8:46 a.m., the time when the first plane struck, neighboring will toll its bell three times.

On Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m., gather at the for the annual Patriot Day ceremony, hosted by , the cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills. WDIV Channel 4 reporter Roger Weber will emcee the event, which will recognize police officers and firefighters of the year, as well as firefighters who walked from the Ambassador Bridge to New York in October 2001 to show support for the New York Fire and Police departments.
