5 Things You Should Know Today - Aug. 14, 2012

Artists from Farmington and Farmington Hills need your vote in a county-wide contest.

Voting closes Aug. 17 in the MIGreatArtist competition, which includes entries from Farmington and Farmington Hills. Here's what else you should know today:

1. The weather

Look for more rain today and even a thunderstorm. The National Weather Service predicts just a small amount of rain, with skies clearing in the afternoon. Today's high should land around 74, tonight's low, in the upper 50s.

Voting continues through Friday in the regional MIGreatArtist.com competition, which in southeast Michigan. Local entries include:


If you are an expectant mother and thinking about nursing your baby, this class at  at 6:30 p.m. today can answer a lot of your questions. Cost is $25, and you need to register in advance. Call 248-888-2500, and the class will also be offered Oct. 9 and Dec. 11.

4. Look ahead:

Parents of preschools are invited to join this group of families who play each week at a different area park. Meet them on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., in . The last playdate this year will be held Aug. 22 at Drake Sports Park in West Bloomfield. There's no charge, no need to register.

5. Look ahead:

The  hosts extremist group expert Dr. Jack Kay for a discussion on “Hate Speech in Cyberspace” on Aug. 15, 7 p.m. Kay will explain how the Internet has created a dramatic increase in terms of visibility and intensity of these acts. The event is free, and regsitration is not required.
