5 Things You Should Know Today - Aug. 20, 2012

Farmington city council will consider final adoption of a noise and fireworks ordinances and hear a presentation from SMART officials.

Farmington city officials will take up final consideration of several ordinances tonight, among other items on an agenda that is posted with this article. Here's what else you should know today:

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts continued cooler temperatures today, under partly sunny skies. Expect a high in the low 70s and low tonight around 57. 

2. Cruis'n the Grand car show

Join the Grand River Cruisers in the Village Commons parking lot on Grand River, east of School St., tonight for a car show that is free to both spectators and participants. The group raises funds through a 50/50 drawing for local charities and causes. The fun starts at 5 p.m., unless it's raining.

Officials will take up an agenda at 7 p.m. that includes presentations from the Miss Farmington program and SMART (Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation) bus officials. They'll also consider approving ordinances governing fireworks, noise and businesses that combine instruction and entertainment. Time is allowed for public comment on any topic. 

4. Look ahead:

Watch over 1,000 marshmallows fall from the sky, enjoy the splash pad, play on a bouncer, do crafts, check out the fire trucks, and a whole lot more at on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m. Kids collect marshmallows and turn them in for goodies. There's a minimal charge for food, but admission to the event is free.

5. Look ahead:

Farmington school officials take up an agenda at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday that includes presentations on Common Core standards, Upper Elementary report card revisions and Michigan Dept. of Education Focus Schools review.
