5 Things You Should Know Today — Aug. 22, 2011

Farmington Hills officials will meet with Detroit City Council President Pro-Tem Gary Brown tonight.

It's the start of another busy week in Farmington and Farmington Hills. Here are a few things you should know today:

1. The weather

Today should be sunny and a little cooler. The National Weather Service predicts a high of 76 degrees, with lows tonight in the upper 50s.

2. '7 Habits' for teens

Farmington Together for All Learners (TAL) and the Farmington PTA Council have put together a daylong workshop Aug. 29 for students in Grades 6-12 based on the Stephen Covey "7 Habits" series. The cost is $60, which includes lunch. Registration has been extended for "7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens"; learn more at farmingtontal.wordpress.com.

3. Use your brain

of Farmington will bring games, activities and exercises, all designed to encourage the use of brain power for adults 50 and older, to the at 1 p.m. today. There's no charge; for information, call 248-473-1800.

If you didn't get your fill of classic cars at the Dream Cruise this past weekend, head over to the Village Commons shopping center parking lot on Grand River at 5 p.m. for Cruis'n the Grand. It's a nice, low-key show that's free for participants and spectators.

5. Farmington Hills City Council

Farmington Hills City Council members meet tonight at , first in a study session at 6 p.m., where they'll talk with Detroit City Council President Pro-Tem Gary Brown about "mutual interests." At 7:30 p.m., officials will take up a regular agenda that includes the extension of a moratorium on medical marijuana land uses, a proposed millage for police and fire in November and purchase of a robotic sewer camera (with the city of Farmington).
