5 Things You Should Know Today — Aug. 23, 2011

Expect a sunny day, but rain may affect this evening's activities.

We've got another beautiful late summer day on tap, with a few fun activities in store this evening:

1. The weather

Look for sunny skies and a high near 80 degrees today, but we've got a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight and a low around 65. We'll keep you posted if the National Weather Service issues any severe weather alerts.

2. Two weeks

Two weeks — that's all the children have left of summer vacation. Just in case you missed it, our Frugal Family columnist Vera Lucksted posted some great tips about school supplies and getting organized.

Tonight in , you can watch Farmington Hills firefighters drop more than 1,000 marshmallows, then enjoy a huge bonfire. This event — which includes crafts, a bounce house, splash pad and tours of fire trucks — is free to attend; if you want to buy a hot dog or a s'more, they cost $1 each. The fun starts at 5 p.m.

The last in Senior Community's summer garden concerts features the Misty Blues Band. The band will start playing at 7 p.m. Call 248-615-2898 for more information about the concert.

5. School board

At tonight's meeting, Farmington school officials will consider appointments of assistant principals at and and will review a year-end sustainability report, among other agenda items. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the in Farmington.
