5 Things You Should Know Today — Aug. 25, 2011

Walk with a doc today in Heritage Park, then come back for an evening concert.

Today includes beginnings and endings and, hopefully, no rain. Here are the details:

1. The weather

After last evening's rocky weather, look for mostly sunny skies with a high of 77. Tonight, the mercury will dip into the mid-50s, according to the National Weather Service.

The folks at and the city of Farmington Hills have teamed up to launch a series of walks through Heritage Park. Walk with a Doc gives you the opportunity to get some healthful exercise, while visiting with a physician on a variety of topics. Today's topic is women's health. This event is free and open to everyone; .

3. Are you ready for some football?

The high school football season kicks off at 7 tonight, with going up against the West Bloomfield Lakers on the Falcons' home turf. plays host to Seaholm High School in Birmingham tonight at 7 p.m. for its home season opener. Tickets cost $6 for general admission, $4 for students at both schools. State champion plays Cass Tech at Eastern Michigan University at 8 p.m. on Saturday, at the 2011 Big Day Prep Showdown VII. Advance tickets are available at Harrison; they're $7 for students and $9 for adults. On-line tickets are available at detroitsports.org and include an additional ticket processing fee of 75 cents per ticket. All tickets at the gate are $12; children age five and under are free.

Stars in the Park closes out a summer of free Stars in the Park concerts in with hometown favorites. The Farmington Community Chorus boasts more than 80 members and a wide repertoire that includes everything from pop to jazz. Bring a blanket, a picnic dinner and sit on the hill overlooking the amphitheater. The music starts at 7 p.m.

5. Summer taxes due

Not today — but next week. Specifically, property owners need to have their property taxes paid by Aug. 31. On Sept. 1, 2011 taxes become delinquent, and nobody wants that. Find information about where and when you can drop off your payments at fhgov.com (Farmington Hills) and ci.farmington.mi.us (Farmington).
