5 Things You Should Know Today - August 17, 2011

The summer is winding down, but there's still fun to be had in Farmington and Farmington Hills:

1. The weather

Today should be sunny with temps in the 80s, but rain is expected to move in tonight. The National Weather Service predicts a 50 percent chance of showers under cloudy skies tonight, with a low around 66.

2. Register for fall activities

Registration is underway for the City of Farmington Hills Special Services fall activities – and congratulations to Peggy Latimer-Wilke, whose gorgeous photo of little Benjamin throwing hay made the Fall Program brochure cover. You can learn more on the city's website, fhgov.com

If you stop by the Mansion for a tour today between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., be sure to ask them about the Aug. 28 Tea Talk, hosted by master tea blender Mary Jones and Rachelle Willnus, of Derby Hats by Racelle.

If you've ever wanted to learn more about drumming, or you're looking to hang out with others who love it, stop by tonight at 6:30 p.m. Rune Palland will offer guidance and assistance to drummers of all skill levels. Cost is $10.

5. Last Family Fun concert

Fiddlers ReStrung headlines tonight's final Family Fun in concert of the season tonight, starting at 7 p.m. These Saline High School students are all top scholars and athletes, and all share a passion for performing. The 21-piece string ensemble proudly displays a diverse arrangement of styles, from American bluegrass and Celtic fiddle to Appalachian step-dancing and more. The concert is free.
