5 Things You Should Know Today - Dec. 26, 2011

City offices are closed today, but the library's open and trash collection continues as usual.

The holiday weekend is officially over, but the official places in our community remain closed today. Here's what else you should know as we start the week:

1. The weather

The National Weather Service is predicting a sunny and relatively warm day, with a high around 42 degrees. But the skies will cloud up tonight, as temperatures drop into the low 30s, with a 50 percent chance of rain or snow, mostly after 1 a.m.

2. Government offices closed

City offices in  and  and the , as well as  and  post office branches are closed today. The and  are open.

3. No change in trash pick-up

If your trash pick-up is normally today, get those containers and bags out onto the curb. There's no change in garbage and recycling routes this week, because the Christmas and New Year holidays fall on Sunday. 

4. Recycling your tree?

From today through Jan. 16, 2012, you can drop off your Christmas tree at  in Farmington Hills for recycling into compost and wood chips that will be made available to the public. There is no charge to drop off trees. All decorations, plastic, tinsel and wire must be removed.

5. Look ahead:

Author, Josphene Gambini, will share her story Poetino Piccolino Saves the Day, and children will hear other Italian stories, rhymes and songs at the Main Library on 12 Mile Rd. tomorrow at 2 p.m. Children ages 4 and older will also be making a special craft. There's no charge for this event, and you don't need to register.
