5 Things You Should Know Today - Dec. 5, 2011

Local government officials meet tonight to talk about issues of mutual interest.

It's the beginning of another busy week in Farmington and Farmington Hills:

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts a 70 percent chance of precipitation today, like rain and snow after 1 p.m. The snow will likely continue tonight, with less than an inch accumulation.

This week-long event will feature lots of home-baked goodies, with all proceeds benefiting Backdoor Friends Purebred Cat Rescue, a not for profit, no-kill organization. Stop by  on Grand River in Farmington Hills Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Beginners are welcome at this class held weekly on Mondays, 7 p.m., at  in Farmington Hills. Instructor Sam Purdy teaches Wu style Tai Chi, a form of exercise and meditation. Cost is $10 per class, for information call Marcia Harmon, 248-553-4174.

Officials from both cities will meet at 7:30 p.m. today in council chambers at to talk about single-stream recycling, SMART regional bus service, shared services, the Grand River Corridor Improvement Authority and a shop local initiative. The public is welcome at this meeting, as well as at a special Farmington city council meeting held at the building at 6 p.m. Farmington officials will review the court's annual report.

5. Look ahead:
