5 Things You Should Know Today - Jan. 17, 2012

A special event this week welcomes seniors to Farmington and Farmington Hills.

Are you a senior new to Farmington Hills? Or do you know someone who is? Today's list of things you should know includes an event this week designed to welcome new residents:

1. The weather

Look for last night's rain to continue through today, changing over to snow after 4 p.m. The National Weather Service predicts a high of 43 today and a low of 20 tonight with blustery conditions and winds gusting as high as 29 miles per hour.

If you're going to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week, be sure to bring your camera (or camera phone) and snap a picture of yourself with your dream car, for a chance to win some Patch gear. Contest details are  – and we've already got some pretty cool entries.

3. Farmington SMART vote

Officials are expected to decide tonight whether to leave the SMART (Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation) bus system, as a result of  to the community. The agenda for their 7 p.m. meeting at city hall (attached to this post) also includes  amendments that will accommodate a move to single-stream recycling and a resolution to renew . There's also time for public comment on any issue, and officials have set aside time for comment on SMART before that vote. 

4. Look ahead:

New Farmington or Farmington Hills residents ages 50 and over are invited to the Thursday at 10:30 a.m. to learn more about the community center, services, trips, and volunteer opportunities. There's no charge; call 248-473-1800 to learn more.

5. Look ahead: Blood drive at the Costick Center

The City of Farmington Hills is hosting this drive 8 a.m.-8 p.m. on Thursday to help meet the critical need for blood and blood products. Visit redcro­ssblood.­org and type in "costickcenter" to make an appointment, or call 248-473-1800 for more information.
