5 Things You Should Know Today - Jan. 2, 2012

All government offices are closed today, but trash collection continues as usual.

Happy 2012! Today is the first government holiday of the year, and the weather promises to be blustery and cold:

1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts just a 30 percent chance of snow, but winds could gust as high as 30 miles per hour today and tonight. The mercury won't get over 28 degrees today, and tonight's low dips to around 13.

2. Government offices closed

Both Farmington and  offices will be closed today, as will the  and both the  and  post office branches. The Farmington Community Library  and  are open.

3. No change in trash collection

Because New Year's Day fell on Sunday, there's no change in trash and recyclables collection. So if the trucks come through your neighborhood on Monday, get those containers out to the curb.

4. Look ahead:

If weight loss is one of your 2012 resolutions, this support group kicks off a new year of meetings tonight at Farmington Hills City Hall, west entrance in the Zoning conference area. For more information, write to OneStepAWeigh@yahoo.com

5. Look ahead: Back to school

Watch for school buses and children walking while you're on the road tomorrow morning, they're headed back to classes. The next school vacation day is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Jan. 16.
