5 Things You Should Know Today – July 11, 2011

Look for today to be hot and steamy in Farmington and Farmington Hills.

It's the start of another week in Farmington and Farmington Hills, and this may be one steamy Monday. Here are a few things you should know today:

1. The weather

Look for one more day of soaring temperatures, likely into the 90s with heat indices in the 100s, according to the National Weather Service. There's a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day, and 30 percent tonight.

2. How to make a living

offers its financial literacy program at the today at 2 p.m., on the topic, "How Do We Make a Living?". This event is geared for kids ages 8-12 and is free, but registration is required. Call the library, 248-553-0300 ext. 220.

This classic car show will be held tonight in the Village Commons mall, unless it's raining. The Grand River Cruisers Car Club hosts, and everything's free. There's a DJ, a 50/50 drawing (proceeds go to charity) and you can take advantage of food discounts at . The fun starts at 5 p.m.

Experienced quilters provide guidance and advice during this evening bee, which starts at 7 p.m. This group has made two quilts that are being raffled off, with proceeds benefiting the Farmington Community Library. They meet at the ; call 248-848-4315 for information.

5. Hills City Council

During their first meeting of the new fiscal year, Hills officials will hold three public hearings:

  • A new section of the city's zoning ordinances governing medical marijuana caregivers
  • Amending the city's zoning code and map to create Freeway Redevelopment Overlay District 2, west of Halsted Road and east of I-275
  • Amending the city's zoning code and map to create Freeway Redevelopment Overlay District 3, east of Haggerty Road and north of I-696.

Officials will also consider adopting a resolution to create a Corridor Improvement Authority on Grand River, to work with the City of Farmington on redevelopment. There is always time allowed for public comment on any issue. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers at ; a full agenda can be found on the city's website.
