5 Things You Should Know Today — July 18, 2011

The Farmington City Council meets tonight, starting with a special meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Whatever you should know today, we think the weather should be at the top of the list. We're headed into a good, old-fashioned heat wave:

1. The weather (it's hot)

Look for today to be a lot like yesterday, except with the chance of thunderstorms after 8 a.m. The National Weather Service predicts a high near 91, with high humidity. .

2. Where to cool off

Farmington city officials will hold a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. to interview a candidate for the Beautification Commission. On their regular agenda at 7 p.m., council members will consider a resolution in support of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automatic external defibrillator (AED) education in ; special event requests from Swinginfusion LLC and the Greater Farmington Area Chamber; tributes to former council members and Mayors Dick Tupper and Ralph Yoder; construction estimates for capital projects; and a resolution to place charter amendments on the November ballot. Unless those thunderstorms are rolling through at 5 p.m., the Grand River Cruisers will host their regular Monday night car show in the Village Commons parking lot west of Orchard Lake Road in Farmington. Admission for spectators and car owners is always free.

Harry Potter fans age 10 and older are invited to this Potter-Pallooza event at the Farmington Community Library Main Library at 7 p.m. Mary Light, master herbalist and director of Naturopathic School of the Healing Arts in Ann Arbor, will unveil the magic of plants.
