5 Things You Should Know Today - July 19, 2012

The Downtown Farmington Founders Festival kicks off tonight with pre-glow events, but you can also watch the Farmington Idol preliminary competition.

At 11:30 a.m. today, barricades will close Farmington Road from Grand River almost to State St., signalling the beginning of the Downtown Farmington Founders Festival. (The Downtown Farmington Center lot closed at midnight.) You can find information in our 2012 Downtown Farmington Founders Festival guide. 

Here's what else you should know today:

1. The weather

There's a 30 percent chance of showers today, but the rain should move out before tonight's Founders Festival Alley Regalley and Walker's Tavern events. The National Weather Service predicts a high around 85, and a low around 63, under cloudy skies.  


Today at 2 p.m., the  will show a 90-minute, family-friendly film that depicts how some 1,400 Michigan World War II vets received all expense paid trips to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. The film makers and producers will be available after the movie. For information, call 248-553-0300.


Ten finalists who will compete July 20 in downtown Farmington Friday at 6 p.m. will be chosen tonight at  on Grand River, in a preliminary that's open to the public. Registration starts at 5 p.m., with the competition beginning at 6 p.m.

4. Look ahead: Free family campfire

Share a story or song by the fire, write on the sharing wall, tour the , make a s'more ($1 charge) or just enjoy the fire with family and friends at  Friday at 7 p.m. The campfire ring is in front of the Nature Center. 

5. Look ahead: Farmers Market moves this weekend

It will be a "growers only" Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market this Saturday, because of Founders Festival activities in the . The Market will be temporarily located in the Downtown Center parking lot south of  extended hours, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
