5 Things You Should Know Today - July 4, 2013

Today's weather may affect your 4th of July holiday plans.

Happy Independence Day! As America celebrates its 236th birthday, you can travel to watch fireworks displays or take in one of two area concerts tonight. 

Remember today because of the federal holiday. 

Here's what else you should know:

1. The weather

The hot, humid weather continues today, with a 30 percent chance that yesterday's thunderstorms will return. The National Weather Service predicts a high near 97 that could feel more like 104. The temperature is expected to drop tonight to around 73, with winds calm after midnight. 


After hearing a preview, we can tell you this free, 8 p.m. concert at  will include rousing renditions of familiar songs like "America, the Beautiful" and "God Bless America," along with a tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces, along with a roof-raising finale. Doors open at 7 p.m.


Gia Warner, who has often played for the Downtown Farmington Founders Festival, Farmers and Artisans Market and Art on the Grand, performs at 6:30 p.m. today to kick off the zoo's summer concert series. The concert is free with zoo admission. 

4. Look ahead:

 is collecting pairs of new or gently used men's, women's, and children's family footwear, including slippers, sandals, tennis shoes, dress boots, heels, flats and more. ShoeBox Recycling keeps the unwanted footwear out of landfills and pays Backdoor Friends Cat Rescue for every pound. Drop off footwear Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m., through Aug. 1. Look for their booth during the Downtown Farmington Founders Festival July 20-21. 

5. Look ahead:

Enjoy a night full of interesting sights and sounds during this event, offered by the at 9:30 p.m. Friday. The event is designed for everyone ages 5 and older. Call 248-477-7735 to register; cost is $3 per person.
