5 Things You Should Know Today - June 14, 2012

It's Flag Day, and the Farmington American Legion Post will retire unserviceable flags in a special ceremony tonight.

Today marks the American flag's 235th birthday and the 63rd official celebration of Flag Day in the U.S. Tonight, you can watch as old, worn flags are disposed of in a dignified ceremony at the Farmington American Legion. Here's what else you should know today:

1. The weather

The temperature creeps closer to 80 degrees today, under mostly sunny skies. The National Weather Service predicts a low tonight around 55, under mostly clear skies.

A "Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags" takes place today in the rear parking lot of in Farmington. Everyone is invited to attend; the ceremony takes about 45 minutes.

Join the Farmington Historical Society today at 7 p.m. for an ice cream social on the porch of this on Grand River in Farmington. Miss Farmington Elyse Newcomer and her court will help scoop ice cream and lead the Victorian lawn games. Cost is just $5 per person. 

4. Look ahead:

On Saturday, the Farmington Historical Society commemorates the War of 1812 bicentennial with a flagraising ceremony at 9 a.m. on the east side of the . David Hales, a resident of Farmington Hills and member of the Michigan Commission on the War of 1812, will talk about Michigan's participation in the War of 1812.

5. Look ahead:
