The American Society of News Editors launched this initiative in 2005, in order to draw attention to the importance of open government and freedom of information. The event coincides each year with President James Madison's birthday on March 16; Madison wrote that “consent of the governed” requires that the people be able to “arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.” Learn more at sunshineweek.org.
