5 Things You Should Know Today - May 21, 2012

Farmington officials take up the issue of chickens during tonight's meeting.

There's a meeting tonight with a very full agenda, including discussion of the chicken ordinance approved by the Planning Commission. Full agendas for their 7 p.m. regular meeting and 6 p.m. study session are attached to this post. 

Here's what else you should know today:

1. The weather

After an idyllic, warm weekend, the National Weather Service predicts a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today. Expect a high around 77, with a low tonight around 49 and a continuing chance of rain before midnight.

At 9:30 a.m. today, State Rep. Vicki Barnett and Congressman Gary Peters (D-Michigan) will be at the in Farmington Hills to discuss the Affordable Care Act and its impact on your healthcare. Experts on health care legislation specific to Michigan will also speak. The meeting is free and open to the public.

4. Look ahead:

The will feature music by Detroit saxophonist George Benson, Elaine Greenberg, Detroit-based Cliff Monear Trio and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) Civic Jazz Orchestra. Funds raised provide gift bags that bring comfort into the lives of area cancer patients. Tickets are $30 at the door.

5. Look ahead:

The Farmington Area Suicide Prevention Task Force will host a Community Conversation Wednesday, 7 p.m., focusing on Suicide Prevention in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) youth. The event, held at , is targeted at parents, youth (ages 12 to 18), teachers, the faith community, service club members, and others who have regular contact with young people.
