5 Things You Should Know Today - May 22, 2012

Two charitable events scheduled in other cities tonight have local connections.

Fundraisers held today in other communities have Farmington-area connections. One helps bring comfort to people undergoing cancer treatment, the other helps a child battling complications from a bone marrow transplant. 

Here's what else you should know today:

1. The weather

Winds may gust up to 20 miles per hour today, but the sun will be out. The National Weather Service predicts a high around 77 and low tonight around 50.

Held at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield today at 7:30 p.m., this benefit concert will feature music by Detroit saxophonist George Benson, , Detroit-based Cliff Monear Trio and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) Civic Jazz Orchestra. Funds raised provide gift bags with stuffed animals, blankets and other items for area cancer patients. Tickets are $30 at the door (no credit cards).

This fundraiser at the Plymouth Elks Club, 41700 Ann Arbor Rd. E., today at 6 p.m. benefits Zach Szilagyi, 5, who is currently battling countless complications following a bone marrow transplant. Zach, his mom, dad and older sister live in Florida but his parents are originally from the Farmington area. Mention Zach's name at the event and receive 3 paddles for $8, so all proceeds go to the Children's Organ Transplant Association to benefit Zach.

4. Look ahead:

Parents and child care providers can learn about the developmental milestones of the first year of life during this event held Wednesday, 6:30 p.m., at the . Learn why infants are called sensory-motor learners, and strategies for building trusting relationships. Register in advance; call 248-658-5506.

5. Look ahead:

Parents, youth (ages 12 to 18), teachers, the faith community, service club members, and others who have regular contact with young people are invited to a Community Conversation Wednesday, 7 p.m., at , focusing on Suicide Prevention in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) youth. The free event is hosted by the Farmington Area Suicide Prevention Task Force.
