5 Things You Should Know Today - Nov. 15, 2011

The Farmington School Board meets tonight, with newly elected members taking office.

Among the other things you should know today, newly elected officials take office at tonight's Farmington School Board meeting:

1. The weather

We'll have mostly sunny skies for a change today, with a high around 59 and winds that could gust up to 18 miles per hour. The National Weather Service predicts a low around 36 tonight.

2. School board members take office

Incumbents Howard Wallach and Karen Bolsen, and newcomers Murray Kahn and George Gurrola take their oaths of office near the beginning of tonight's Farmington School Board meeting, held at the in Farmington. Bolsen and Wallach received 6-year terms, Kahn, a 4-year term, and Gurrola, a partial term of four years.

3. School board agenda

With a new board in place, Farmington Schools officials will take up an agenda that includes reports on Camp Riley's summer program, transitions for students and instructional vision and action plans, a maintenance agreement with the City of Farmington for the Flanders Elementary site, and a resolution of authority for the Eagle Elementary site sale, among other items. The full board packet is posted on the District's website. Remember, there's always time allowed for public comment toward the end of the meeting.

4. Look ahead: , Support

on 12 Mile Rd. in Farmington Hills has launched two new support groups that meet on Thursdays. Grief and Loss is a therapy group just for seniors, and Aging Issues for Men addresses relationship, health and other issues facing senior men. Information is on our calendar, or call 248-476-2229.
