5 Things You Should Know Today - Oct. 10, 2011

It's Columbus Day, it's the start of National Fire Prevention Week, and for those of you who celebrate, we're exactly three weeks away from Hallowe'en. If you haven't got a costume idea yet, be sure to read Jan Cartwright's story about the .

Here's what else we think you should know today:

1. The weather

Today will be a virtual repeat of the weekend weather. According the National Weather Service, we'll see mostly sunny skies and a high of 76, then a low tonight of 53, under mostly clear skies.

2. Register to vote

Tomorrow, Oct. 11, is the last day you can register to vote in . Anyone who isn't already registered should visit the city clerk's office (located at and city halls). Voters may also register at any Secretary of State branch office or at the Oakland County clerk's office in Pontiac.

3. It's National Fire Prevention week

Ever wonder why this awareness week happens every year in October? According to the National Fire Protection Association website: "On the 40th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America (today known as the International Fire Marshals Association), decided that the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire should henceforth be observed ... in a way that would keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention." will hold an open house this Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Fire Station No. 5, 11 Mile and Orchard Lake Roads. If you've ever wanted to give yoga a try, you can take your first class free at Christian Yoga Slow Flow for All, offered at in Farmington Hills. They're holding a class at 6:30 p.m. today. Just visit soulstretch.org/classes_and_locations to let them know you're coming.

Tonight, officials will consider passing resolutions in support of fixing court funding inequities, prohibiting use of cell phones by drivers 18 years of age and younger, and supporting legislation to preserve public, educational and government access television. In addition, they'll hold a public hearing about the development of a 17-home, gated community on the south side of 13 Mile Rd. east of Halsted, and consider adopting a resolution to create a Corridor Improvement Authority for Grand River. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at and includes time for public comment on any topic.
