5 Things You Should Know Today - Sept. 1, 2011

We're adding a new feature to help you keep up with our local sports teams.

The idea came to us in a flash: Many of you love high school sports. So why not include varsity and junior varsity games in our daily list?

1. The weather

The clouds will stick around today, but the weather should remain dry and warm, with a high of 86. The low temperature tonight should climb out of the 60s, according to the National Weather Service

Boys & girls cross country opening scrimmage at Kensington, 4 p.m.
Football at Adams, freshmen 4:30 p.m., JV 6:30 p.m.
Girls varsity swimming at West Bloomfield, 6 p.m.
Boys soccer hosts Andover, JV 5:30 p.m., varsity 7 p.m.


Varsity football at Southfield, 4 p.m.
Boys soccer at Avondale, JV-5:30 p.m., varsity-7 p.m.

3. Blood drive at Longacre

The American Red Cross has a critical need for blood in the summer, and tropical storm Irene has further depleted its supplies. There's a blood drive at in Farmington Hills today, from 1 p.m.-7 p.m. To learn more about donating, visit redcrossblood.org

Enjoy an evening of crafting and conversation at at 6 p.m. Bring your knitting or other hand-work; there's no charge to participate, if you make a purchase.

Four Block Empire will be the featured band tonight at on Grand River in downtown Farmington. There's no charge for the concert.
