5 Things You Should Know Today — Sept. 19, 2011

It's the start of another busy week in Farmington and Farmington Hills.

Fall starts this week, so enjoy these last few days of summer. Here's what's happening today in Farmington and Farmington Hills:

1. The weather

While there's a 90 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today, the National Weather Service doesn't expect severe weather. Showers are expected to continue through about 8 p.m., followed by patchy fog. Expect a high of 67 degrees today and a low of 56 degrees tonight.

State Sen. Vincent Gregory (D-14th District) will meet with constituents at 10 a.m. today at the Southfield Library, 26300 Evergreen Rd. Share a conversation regarding state and community issues, including new business and pension tax plans.

  • Golf junior varsity and varsity B teams play Farmington at 3 p.m. at ; varsity plays at Notre Dame Prep at 4:15 p.m. at Fieldstone Golf Course.
  • Field hockey junior varsity hosts Maumee Valley, 6 p.m., varsity, 4:30 p.m.

If you've ever wanted to know what the Jaycees are all about, or if you're a young adult looking for a local service group to join, stop by John Cowley & Sons in Farmington at 7 p.m. This informational and social evening is open to all.

City officials will meet in a 6 p.m. study session to review applications for the council seat vacated by Mike Wiggins, as well as to discuss appointments to the Planning and Beautification commissions. During their regular meeting at 7 p.m., council members will hear a report from Downtown Development Authority Director Annette Knowles and consider an agreement related to SMART bus service. They will also consider amending the city's alcohol ordinance to allow businesses that offer "bring your own bottle" events.
