5 Things You Should Know Today - Sept. 21, 2011

The community is invited to a public forum on suicide prevention tonight at Farmington Hills city hall.

We've made it half-way through a busy week in Farmington and Farmington Hills. Here's what's happening today:

1. The weather

While it will be a warm day, with a high of 77 degrees, the National Weather Service predicts a 40 percent chance of showers during the day. The weather is expected to clear tonight, leaving partly cloudy skies and a low of 52.

The Oakland County Community Mental Health Authority hosts this event today at Courtyard By Marriott, to share information with the community about what's happening with healthcare reform, the healthcare needs of the community, and how these issues affect people with disabilities and the community as a whole. Farmington Community Library, Farmington Branch invites parents and children ages 3-5 to enjoy open-ended activities that will help with pre-reading skills. The free event starts at 6:30 p.m.

The message tonight is simple: "You can make a difference. You can prevent a tragedy." Designed for parents, students ages 12 to 18, teachers, and anyone who has contact with youth, this event features guest speakers who lost their sons to suicide and now reach out to others to create an awareness of the disease of depression and its link to suicide. The free forum will begin at 6:45 p.m. at with refreshments and networking, followed by the program at 7 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Farmington Area Suicide Prevention Task Force and the .
