5 Things You Should Know Today—Aug. 10, 2011

A big cooldown drops temperatures into the 70s today.

Things may be cooling down weatherwise in Farmington and Farmington Hills, but there's still plenty to heat up your Wednesday:

1. The weather

After weeks of temperatures in the 80s and 90s, we're in for a bit of a cooldown. Look for partly sunny skies today and a high of 75 and wind gusts up to 29 miles per hour. Tonight the wind dies down, and the mercury dips into the upper 50s, according to the National Weather Service.

Join photographer Jacob Nothstine tonight at 6 p.m. in Heritage Park for a walk through nature and some tips designed to improve your nature photography. Cost is $10 for residents, $15 for nonresidents. Registration is required. Call 248-473-1800.

This small, informal group offers adults 50 and older the opportunity to start healing from the loss of a loved one in a caring and supportive setting. The group meets today at 1:30 p.m. at the in Farmington Hills.

Let one of the friendly docents at the mansion take you on a walk through history from 1-5 p.m. at the home of Michigan's only three-term governor, on Grand River in Farmington. You'll learn about Fred Warner's life and about Victorian customs and family life.

5. Problem solving with children

The Oakland Child Care Council’s Early Learning Center offers child care providers, family caregivers and parents a chance to learn advanced conflict-resolution techniques and an important six-step process to help children resolve conflicts on their own.
