5 Things You Should Know Today—July 19, 2011

The heat wave continues, and the Red Cross needs your help.

The weather continues to be top of mind for us, but there are other things you should know about today:

1. Heat, Ozone Action Day

The National Weather Service has issued an air-quality alert for today, and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has declared today an ozone action day as our heat wave continues. Because of increased levels of ozone in the air, active children, adults and those with respiratory illnesses like asthma should avoid long periods of exertion outdoors today. on Oakland Street in Farmington is hosting this class for seventh-graders through adults at 10 a.m. Bring scissors, a small white glue bottle and 9-by-12-inch construction paper, and discover the possibilities. Call to let them know you're coming, 248-474-6880.

The American Red Cross has a crisis-level need for blood donations, and you can help today at on Gill Road, from 1-7 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, or call 800-733-2767.

Every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., people who speak English as a Second Language can come to the and practice their English skills in an informal, comfortable environment. There's no charge to attend this group, which meets in Conference Room A.

The last Harry Potter movie is now in theaters, and at 7 p.m. today you can take part in the last Harry Potter book discussion at the Farmington Community Library Main library. The group will discuss Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; there is no charge, but registration is required. Call 248-553-0300.
