5 Things You Should Know Today—July 20, 2011

The record heat wave continues, and we've got tips to beat the heat.

We'll have another scorcher in Farmington and Farmington Hills today, and yet another Ozone Action Day. Anyone with breathing problems should avoid exerting themselves, and we should all avoid doing things like putting gas in the car and mowing the lawn.

Here are a few more things you should know today:

1. How to stay healthy in the heat

Farmington Hills Fire Department Lt. Denny Hughes gave us some helpful tips last month about avoiding heat-related illnesses. This would be a good time to take another look at how to keep the heat from taking a toll on you.

2. Voluntary watering restrictions

The is asking all water users to follow some rules for watering lawns and gardens. Automatic sprinklers should be set to water between midnight and 6 a.m., and homeowners are asked to alternate watering, with even-numbered residences watering Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and odd-numbered residences on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. If you didn't get a chance to tour this historic home during the Founders Festival, you can stop by today from 1-5 p.m. A small donation is requested, and the funds go toward taking care of the city-owned property.
