5 Things You Should Know Today—July 5

Trash pickup in Farmington and Farmington Hills will be a day off all week long.

After a long holiday weekend, we're helping to get you back in the swing with a few things you should know today:

1. Construction begins again

Hope you enjoyed the break from holiday road construction. At 6 a.m. today, got back under way, including the construction zone on Grand River (M-5) between Eight Mile Road and Purdue in Farmington Hills.

2. Did you put out the trash?

If your trash pickup in Farmington or Farmington Hills is regularly on Monday, your garbage cans and bags and recycling bins should be out on the curb today. Trash pickup will be a day off all week long because of the holiday.

3. Guessing jar

Each week during the Summer Reading Program, the and give kids through seventh grade (as of June 2011) the opportunity to win a jar full of prizes. If you read for one hour, you get one guess at how many items are in the jar. Prizes vary every week. Guessing starts today, and all guesses must be in by 6 p.m. Friday.

The offers the last of its two-session boater's safety classes starting tonight at 6 p.m. and continuing Thursday, same time. By passing this class, participants ages 12-16 will be allowed to operate a personal watercraft and a motorboat of 6 horsepower or more—but they have to attend both nights. To register, call the Costick Center at 248-473-1800; cost is $20.
