Australian Film 'The Sapphires' Opens May 24 at the Farmington Civic Theater

The story of four young Aboriginal girls who form an all-girl singing group features Motown music.

An independent Australian film that drew a rave response at the Cannes Film Festival opens May 24 at the Farmington Civic Theater.

The Sapphires (PG-13) is based on the true story of four young, talented Australian Aboriginal girls who form an all-girl singing group and entertain U.S. troops in 1968. Chris O'Dowd, star of the popular movie Bridesmaids, plays an almost-washed-up producer who sees the potential in the group.

"When I heard this movie received a ten-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, I had to give it a try," theater manager Scott Freeman said. "It's a fantastic film with a great story and lots of Motown music."
