Botsford Nurse Saves a Life in Southfield

Tracy Congress' quick action earns her a special award.

As an operating room nurse, Tracy Congress, RN, is used to a fast-paced environment where she participates in life-saving decisions at in Farmington Hills.

Congress has been selected as a recipient of a Botsford Hospital 2011 Safety Excellence Award to recognize her quick action in saving a person’s life, at a Southfield gym.

During her workout, Congress noticed a woman collapsing on a treadmill. Seeing the woman was in cardiac arrest, Congress immediately began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. She directed bystanders to call 9-1-1 and to bring her an automated external defibrillator (AED), which she used.

Reviving the woman even before paramedics arrived, this unflappable nurse continued her workout once the woman was transported to the hospital. The woman has since resumed working out at the gym after recovering from bypass surgery.
