Can't Stop Now (Part III)

Vacation pictures show the beauty of the south.

Well, we made it through the mountains of West Virginia to the foothills of western South Carolina. We are headed to Charleston, SC.

One sight I found while researching for our trip is the bridge from Mount Pleasant to Charleston. I had every intention of making several photographs of and from the bridge, but it was not to be, since we “can’t stop now” on the bridge.

I had visions of how I would find a spot where my photo would include most of the bridge, starting from the right and arching up and to the left with the city of Charleston in the upper left third of the photo.

The bridge is truly an engineering marvel, being eight lanes wide with a pedestrian walkway wide enough for walking or jogging both ways along with bicycle traffic, all at the same time. It offers a spectacular view of the surroundings. Can’t stop now, the bridge is not on the agenda. If I ever return, I will spend whatever time it takes to photograph from that walkway.

Our agenda included the most photographed Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens, which stands at the end of almost a mile of “live oaks”. It is a fabulous sight and a step backward in time. My wife took the shot of Live Oak Road on the way in. The trees were planted in 1743 and form a natural arch. You may have seen this “avenue of oaks” in a number of TV, film and print presentations.

Another feature of the plantation are the original slave cabins. My photo of six of them is stark reminder of the past in this region.

More to come in the next edition.
