Crime Report: Farmington Officers Make Drunken Driving Arrests on Sunday

Officers on patrol from between 1 and 4 a.m. Sunday made four drunken driving arrests on Grand River in Farmington.

Around 1:10 a.m., an officer stopped a 40-year-old Farmington Hills woman at Grand River and Smithfield after watching her vehicle straddle the center lane and nearly collide with a vehicle ahead of her that was also making a turn. According to the report, the officer noticed a strong odor of intoxicants and the woman failed sobriety tests. A portable breath test at the scene showed her blood-alcohol level was .13, over the .08 legal limit. The woman was taken into custody on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and a passenger in the car, who also appeared intoxicated, was driven home. A check of the woman's background showed a similar arrest on July 28.

At 1:36 a.m., police stopped a 22-year-old Troy man near Grand River and Halsted, after the man's vehicle went through a red light and turned onto the M-5 ramp without signalling. According to the report, a portable breath test showed the man's blood-alcohol level was .10, which is over the .08 legal limit. He was taken into custody.

A 19-year-old Bloomfield man was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, after his vehicle straddled lanes on Grand River near Drake and a brake light on the car wasn't working. According to the report, a portable breath test registered the man's blood-alcohol content at .13, more than the .08 legal limit. None of his three passengers had valid driver's licenses; they were transported to a residence at Independence Green Apartments.

Police arrested a 23-year-old Farmington Hills woman around 3:30 a.m. at Grand River and Sherwood after stopping her vehicle for having a loud exhaust, tinted windows and a license plate obstruction. According to the report, a portable breath test measured her blood-alcohol content at .14, which is more than the .08 legal limit.

Minor-in-possession ticket

An 18-year-old Dearborn man was ticketed on a minor-in-possession charge Wednesday around 3 a.m., after police stopped his vehicle for traveling 32 miles per hour in the "fast lane" on M-5. According to the report, the driver told the officer he borrowed the vehicle and the speedometer wasn't working. The driver had no identification, and a six-pack of Mike's Hard Cranberry Lemonade was found in the vehicle. He was also ticketed for improper lane usage.

Breaking and entering

A resident on Heatherton Drive told police that sometime between 3 and 10 p.m. Monday, someone took a 5-gallon gas can from his garage. The garage door was open, but nothing else was taken.

Retail fraud charged

A 51-year-old Farmington Hills man was arrested Saturday on charges that he took items from both and without paying for them. According to the report, a store employee called police after seeing the man put an electronics item under his shirt and leave the store without paying for it. Police caught up with the man at Grand River and Nine Mile Road, where they found he had a DVD player with a Big Lots price tag, along with cans of car cleaner, later found to have come from ACO. When police checked his background, they found 15 prior larceny and shoplifting convictions, along with a grand theft auto conviction and a warrant on a charge of theft and battery, all out of Florida. The man was arraigned in 47th District Court on two counts of retail fraud; bond was set at $2,500.
