Farmers Market, Baseball Parade Kick Off Spring Saturday in Farmington

Pack your patience as you head for downtown Farmington today, there's a lot happening.

The first Saturday in May is typically the official start of spring in downtown Farmington, with the opening of the Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market and the South Farmington Baseball and Softball season. 

Parking spaces may be difficult to find, so check out the Farmington Downtown Development Authority (DDA) website to download a map that shows all of the area's public parking areas.

Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market

Time: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (opening ceremony at 8:45 a.m.)

Location: Orchard Street, just east of Farmington Road

Details: A variety of activities for children include Little Sprouts kids area hosted by Mayfair Co-op Preschoolwill have Kentucky Derby-themed activities, face painting with Pooky the Clown, balloon sculpture with Balloons 4 J, and a horseshoe kids game courtesy of Friends of the Market. Bob Monteleone will open the Music at the Market season. South Farmington Baseball and Softball Parade & Opening Day

Time: The parade starts at 9:30 a.m., with teams gathering at 9 a.m. The opening day ceremony is expected to begin at 10 a.m.

Location: The parade starts at Farmington City Hall opening day ceremony is at Shiawassee Park. 

Details: Teams leave city hall and cross Grand River to Oakland Street, head east to Farmington Road, then north to Shiawassee and east to Shiawassee Park. Residents along the route are encouraged to cheer the players on as they celebrate the beginning of their 2013 season. 

Field of Flags

Time: 11 a.m. opening ceremony

Location: Farmington Hills Church of God, 25717 Power Road, Farmington

Details: The church is hosting a display of more than 6,000 flags that represent the lives lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. According to the display website: "Each flag represents not simply one casualty, but all the family members and friends who have been touched by that life now gone. They represent our respect for those who have served and are currently serving in the military and our hope for peace in the future, for a time when no one is called upon by our country to give the greatest sacrifice."

History-themed Jane's Walk

Time: Noon

Location: Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market information booth

Details:  Farmington resident Brian Golden leads this 45-minute walk through downtown Farmington. The event is one among many held across Michigan in memory of urban activist Jane Jacobs, who believed in urban design that fosters community. According to the Jane's Walk website, "There are only two rules: walks should be taken and given for free, and they should be walking conversations."
