Farmington Hills Attorney Richard Bernstein Seriously Injured in NY

Bernstein was struck from behind while walking in a pedestrian lane at Central Park and is being treated at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Farmington Hills attorney Richard Bernstein was injured Monday, when he was struck from behind by a bicyclist while walking in Central Park in New York, NY, The Detroit News reports.

In a post on Bernstein's Facebook page, he wrote that police told him the bicyclist was traveling at 35 miles per hour. Bernstein, who has been blind since birth, said he was walking in a pedestrian lane at the time of the accident. 

"Although I'm concerned about my fractured pelvis, hip, and the additional injuries sustained to my face and body, I'm even more concerned about the future of pedestrian safety," Bernstein said.

A staunch advocate for the rights of people with disabilities, Bernstein has had a hand in several local cases involving pedestrian safety. In 2011, over the installation of safety devices at pedestrian crossings in roundabouts on Farmington Rd. in Farmington Hills.

He also stepped into a dispute between a property owner and the RCOC, which resulted in the eimination of a , also in Farmington Hills.

Bernstein currently represents , who has sued to force renovations for handicapped accessibility at a state-leased office building in Detroit. 

A member of the Farmington Hills-based Bernstein family law firm, he is being treated at Mt. Sinai Hospital and, among other injuries, is expected to undergo extensive dental work, WDIV-TV reports
