Farmington Hills Resident's Pie Contest Entry Pops into First Place

Kristen O'Dea experimented to perfect her Mixed Berry Pops for Saturday's Homemade from Scratch Pie Contest.

It took "a lot of trial and error," but Farmington Hills resident Kristen O'Dea finally came up with a winner.

Her Mixed Berry Pops – small berry-filled pies on a stick – took top honors in Saturday's Homemade from Scratch Pie Contest at the Old Winery Farmers Market. O'Dea also entered last year, when most of the fruit pies were apple.

This year's nine entries included only one of those; the rest ranged from a Snickers Bar brownie pie to Mary Piontek's second place strawberry pie. Judges sampled each and ranked them based on overall appearance, crust, filling and originality.

O'Dea's pie pops were one-of-a-kind. She said she was looking for gifts for a client when she stumbled across the recipe.

"It just kind of dinged in my head, and I said, 'I can do that'," she said. "Last year, everybody made apple pies. I wanted to think outside the box."
