Farmington Hills Residents Among New Salvation Army Leaders

Mayor Marlyn Anderson now oversees activities at the Salvation Army's Farmington Hills Community Center.

The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division announces the appointment of Farmington Hills residents to its Detroit Harbor Light System and Metro Detroit Corps Community Centers.

The Salvation Army has appointed Captain James Winkler as director of The Salvation Army’s Detroit Harbor Light System, and Captain Deborah Winkler as director of women’s ministries and pastoral care. The Winklers will oversee a broad range of emergency services for homeless men, women and families at the Harbor Light System including a veterans’ transitional housing program.

The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Harbor Light System operates three primary campuses – Detroit, Macomb County, and Monroe – with a total bed capacity of 750. The Harbor Light System is also the home of the Bed and Bread Club which serves more than 1.7 million meals annually.

Winkler has more than 14 years with The Salvation Army, and previously served as director of the St. Louis Harbor Light Center. He holds a master’s degree in social work from Jane Addams College of Social Work at the University of Illinois and a Master of Business Administration and certificate of nonprofit management from Roosevelt University. Captain Deborah Winkler holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from St. Louis University.

Major Marlys Anderson was appointed administrator of The Salvation Army’s Farmington Hills Corps Community Center. Major Anderson will provide leadership at the Farmington Hills site, overseeing all activities. She is a resident of Farmington Hills.

Anderson most recently served as administrator of The Salvation Army’ s Austin, MN location, a position she held for six years. Anderson holds an associate occupational studies degree in ministry from The Salvation Army School for Officer Training.
