The Nordkap Lodge of the Sons of Norway hosts a festive Norwegian Constitution Day celebration Saturday in Farmington Hills.

Saturday's rainy weather didn't dampen the spirits of attendees at the annual Norwegian Constitution Day celebration sponsored by Nordkap Lodge of the Sons of Norway. The event was held at on Ruth Street in Farmington Hills.

The day began with an informal parade around the grounds, with many people in traditional Norwegian dress or carrying Norwegian flags and featuring traditional Scandinavian music. Next, the group assembled inside the facility, and sang three national anthems - those of the United States, Canada and Norway (sung in Norweigian). After an address by Dennis Flessland, Consul of Norway for Michigan, the crowd enjoyed a meal complete with Norwegian specialties and music.

Perhaps the most anticipated event of the day was the Cod Toss - competitors were grouped by age and launched a large frozen fish head across the lawn. The person in each group who threw the cod the farthest was crowned champion.

The cod is an important part of Norwegian life, and although this particular activity is not a part of traditional celebrations in Norway, the group created the competition to honor the noble fish and to add some excitement and fun to the day. Judging by the smiles on every face, it worked!
