For Page's Chili Cook-Off Winner, It's All in the Family

Michelle Vennix's recipe for the competition came from her mother, whose apple pie won a recent award.

The winner of the Judges Award at Sunday's 16th annual Chili Cook-Off at in Farmington comes by her talent naturally.

Michelle Vennix, 24, of Wixom said her winning chili started with a recipe from her mother, Sharon Davis, who contest.

"It was my mom's recipe for taco soup," said Vennix, who grew up in Farmington. "I just made it more into the meaty chili."

Hans Mosher of Farmington Hills won the People's Choice Award for a white chili recipe he called "Big Bird Chili."

Mosher said he's been cooking for about 10 years but had never entered a competition.

Sunday's Chili Cook-Off included raffle prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Organizers estimated that they raised more than $300, which will be donated to the , a historic home owned by the city of Farmington Hills.

Each winner received a plaque, a night's stay at and a bottle of champagne.

Judges for the event were Paul Gross, meteorologist for WDIV, Channel 4; Scott Stevenson of Artziephartzie Graphic Design; Hal Groat of the ; Stacy Jenkins of the Farmington Observer; Kimberly Riley of the Riley Foundation; Farmington Idol competition winner and home remodeler Pat Watts; Chrysler engineer Jerry Balogh; Ann Arbor resident Peter Mets; and Farmington Patch editor Joni Hubred-Golden.
