Free Emergency Preparedness Training Offered in Farmington Hills

Adults and teens who go through all six sessions earn a backpack filled with emergency supplies.

The Farmington Hills/Farmington Emergency Preparedness Commission (EPC) will present a free series of Emergency and Disaster Response Training sessions every Monday from 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m., from Sept. 12-Oct. 17 at the in Farmington Hills. 

The free training sessions are open to adults and children ages 14 and up who are accompanied by an adult.

The Emergency and Disaster Response Training will prepare citizens to rely on each other when first responders who provide fire and medical services are unable to meet immediate needs. Participants will learn what to expect in terms of emergency services, individual responsibility for preparedness, and life saving skills. Topics will include:

  • Session I – Disaster Preparedness: Appropriate actions before, during, and after a disaster.
  • Session II - Light Search and Rescue Operations: Strategies and search techniques, with a focus on rescuer safety.
  • Session III - Disaster Medical Operations, Part I: Participants practice diagnosing and treating airway obstruction, bleeding, and shock by using simple triage and rapid treatment techniques.
  • Session IV - Disaster Medical Operations, Part II: Covers evaluating patients by doing a head to toe assessment, establishing a medical treatment area, performing basic first aid, and practicing in a safe and sanitary manner.
  • Session V – Disaster Fire Suppression: Safe use of fire extinguishers, hazardous materials awareness, fire suppression strategies, and how to safely turn off utilities.
  • Session VI – Disaster Psychology: Symptoms experienced by disaster victims and workers.
